Removing Tone Arm

Removing and Shipping Your Victrola Reproducer or Tonearm for Rebuilding

New England Victrola LLC offers professional rebuilding services for original Victor Victrola reproducers and tonearm assemblies. Follow the instructions below to safely remove and ship your components for restoration.

Removing the Reproducer

Over time, the original rubber gaskets inside a Victrola reproducer become hard and brittle, affecting sound quality. Rebuilding the reproducer restores proper sound reproduction and helps protect your valuable records from unnecessary wear.

Removal Instructions:

  1. Remove the steel needle from the reproducer.
  2. Hold the tonearm’s crook (curved end) firmly with one hand.
  3. Grasp the reproducer with your other hand and gently rotate it to disengage the bayonet fitting.
  4. Carefully pull the reproducer away from the crook.

Do not force the reproducer if it is stuck. Contact us for assistance.

Packing and Shipping:

Wrap the reproducer carefully, protecting the delicate needle bar and diaphragm from pressure. Pack it securely in a sturdy box with sufficient cushioning to prevent movement during shipping.

Include your name, telephone number, email address, and return shipping address.

Removing the Complete Tonearm and Reproducer Assembly

After more than 100 years, the original oil and grease in the tonearm bearings and crook joint have almost certainly dried up completely. Rebuilding these components restores smooth, effortless operation, reduces unnecessary wear, and prolongs the life of the tonearm.  Removing the tone arm is very simple.

Removal Instructions:

  1. Remove the steel needle from the reproducer.
  2. Locate the tonearm black metal mount at the base of the tonearm.
  3. Remove the 3 flat head screws holding the black metal mount to the wood and lift the tonearm assembly straight up from the wood deck.
  4. Leave the reproducer attached to the crook. There is no need to remove it when sending the complete assembly.
  5. Do not include any removed screws or retaining hardware with the shipment.
  6. Do not remove the tone arm from the black mount, there are bearings in there, we need the complete assembly.  See picture for an example of what you will be sending.

If you are unsure how to remove your tone arm, contact us for help.

Packing and Shipping:

Carefully wrap the complete assembly to protect the original plated finish and delicate reproducer components. Use a sturdy box with plenty of cushioning, making sure the tonearm cannot shift or move during shipping.  If shipping with the motor board, make sure there is enough room in the box so the tone arm is protected from damage by the motor board.  The tone arm & reproducer are more fragile than the motor or motor board so be sure to wrap with plenty of bubble wrap.

Include your contact information and return shipping address.
